How Brexit Still Shapes British Politics

Brexit's Enduring Legacy: Underlying Divisions Persist in UK Politics
Share

A decade after the 2016 referendum, Brexit is no longer the dominant issue in every election or policy debate. Its political effects, however, have not disappeared. The referendum reorganised voter identities, sharpened arguments about sovereignty and immigration, and changed how parties compete for support.

Brexit and its continuing influence on British politics

From one issue to a wider political divide

The Leave–Remain split brought together voters whose differences were not captured neatly by the traditional left–right divide. Questions of national identity, migration, trust in institutions and attitudes towards social change became more important in party competition.

Those alignments have since evolved. Voters do not necessarily make every decision through a Brexit lens, but the coalitions assembled during and after the referendum continue to influence where parties look for support.

The policy legacy

Brexit also changed the practical terrain of government. Trade, migration rules, regulatory policy and relations with the EU now involve choices that were previously made within a different institutional framework.

The result is a political legacy that is less visible than in the referendum years but still important. Brexit now operates less as a single campaign question and more as part of the background structure of British politics.
